Glass Railing Guide: Base Shoe, Standoff, Spigot & More

How to compare frameless railing approaches, glass, mounting, waterproofing, finish and engineering requirements.

How to compare frameless railing approaches, glass, mounting, waterproofing, finish and engineering requirements.

Base shoe / continuous channel

A continuous base channel can create the cleanest frameless appearance. The detail may be top-mounted, fascia-mounted or recessed, and it should be coordinated with structure and waterproofing.

Standoffs

Side-mounted standoffs keep the walking surface clear and create a floating glass edge. Panel holes, fascia geometry and structural anchorage need precise coordination.

Spigots

Individual base clamps create an open look without a continuous shoe. Suitability depends on the project condition, loading, glass and engineering.

Glass selection

Tempered/laminated construction, thickness, low-iron option, panel width, polished edges and fabrication details should be finalized from approved drawings.

Engineering and waterproofing

Guard loads, wind exposure, anchors, substrate and local code requirements govern the final detail. On exterior balconies, waterproofing and railing attachment should be coordinated together.

Project note

Technical guides are educational. Current approvals, engineering, manufacturer documents and the project drawings govern the final product and installation.
