A clear guide to laminated impact, insulated laminated, Low-E coatings, tint and low-iron glass.
Laminated impact glass
Two or more glass plies are bonded with an interlayer so fragments remain attached after breakage. The exact construction must be part of the approved window, door or storefront system.
Insulated laminated glass
An insulating airspace can improve thermal performance but increases overall unit thickness and often weight. The frame must be designed for that makeup.
Low-E coatings
Low-emissivity coatings can reduce solar heat gain and influence reflectance/color. Coating family, tint and surface location should be confirmed before release.
Low-iron glass
Reducing iron content makes glass more color-neutral. That is especially noticeable in thick frameless railing panels and other design-focused applications.
Replacement glass
Do not match replacement glass by “gray” or “clear” alone. Identify thickness, lamination, heat treatment, tint, coating and the original system whenever possible.
Technical guides are educational. Current approvals, engineering, manufacturer documents and the project drawings govern the final product and installation.
